Welcome to the journey of Santa Rey Stable. A lot of fun, a bunch of passion, a ton of work and the risk of unbearable heartbreak. Just like real life.
We are a small stable based in New York racing out of Tom Morley’s barn. We’ve bought yearlings, 2 year olds, we’ve claimed horses out of races and now we are taking a shot at breeding our own home breds. All with different and exciting challenges.
We have two runners currently in training. Son of a Birch, a 5yo gelding by Temple City out of the Scat Daddy mare, Urquia. Urquia means “place of the birches” in the Basque country. “Birchy” has wins at Belmont, Fair Grounds and Monmouth. He is on a 30 day vacation before starting his spring campaign.
Paula’s a Star is a 3 yo filly by Tapiture out of the Pioneerof the Nile mare Seeking a Star. Paula is a big sturdy horse who made her debut in May of last year. She finished a solid 3rd against the boys in a race run at the incorrect distance. She has been off since then due to a couple injuries, but is back in training with a goal on the horizon.
Next up is our 2yo filly by Blame out of European stallion Cape Blanco’s mare Spanker. Santa Rey Stable is a 25% owner of this $250k September Keeneland Sale purchase. She is getting her prep work down in Ocala at Sandhurst Thoroughbreds.
Union Prayer is a 13 year old broodmare currently in foal to Greatest Honour. We bought her last year in foal. Our plan is to send her to Sequel Stallions in New York to have the foal there. In order for a foal to be considered a New York foal, the mare must stay in NY for 90 days. We will keep Union Prayer there and breed her back to NY stallion Mullion.
Bobby’s Honour is Union Prayer’s yearling (one year old) filly. When we bought Union Prayer last year, Union Prayer was in foal to Bobby’s Honour. She is large, has excellent confirmation and according to Considine Farm in Paris Kentucky, where she will reside until September 2025.
At the 2024 Keeneland Breeding Stock Sale, we bought Vow Saver, a 2018 mare in foal to Maximus Mischief. Both our broodmares are scheduled to foal around March 20, 2025. Vow Saver will be bred back to Greatest Honour.
We own a “Share the Upside” lifetime breeding share through Spendthrift Stallion Farm in Greatest Honour. The Share the Upside program allows you to buy a season for a bit over price, then we have a free lifetime share for the rest of Greatest Honour’s stallion career. Hopefully, Greatest Honour throw’s fantastic runners and this Share the Upside becomes quite valuable.
